#TMR - Episode 8 - Storytelling through Upcycling - Adhesif Clothing - Melissa Ferreira Schwager
Mar 11, 2021 Episode 8
Katherine Soucie

This episode is a conversation with textile artist and designer Melissa Ferreira Schwager about how she came to establish her brand Adhesif Clothing through her experience as vintage clothing buyer. After 17 years of being located in Vancouver, Canada she recently relocated to Germany. Her unique, patchwork aesthetic is an exploration of upcycling where zero waste methods are combined with sustainable surface design techniques. We talk about how she came to develop her knowledge and expertise in working with certain fibres and materials through the process of upcycling.

Our discussion looks at how she chooses to take a project based approach to her collections and how this translates into a story - capturing the history of the cloth in collaboration with the methods and processes she uses in their transformation.   We also speak very candidly about the creative process, Vancouver, and how methods of creative use/reuse such as upcycling is a valuable skillset and sustainable solution for textile waste in our environment.  `

For more information on our guest:

Originally born in Montreal, Canada, Melissa was influenced by her mother who worked as a production line seamstress in a factory there. She would often sit for hours by her mother’s industrial sewing machine playing with scraps of fabrics and sorting buttons while her mother sewed. It is not surprising that since this time she has been experimenting with textiles, Melissa is proud to say she is a self-taught designer and artist.

Working as a vintage clothing buyer for many years inspired Melissa to create garments with older textiles because of the amazing quality and special characteristics a lot of these reclaimed textiles own. There is a double advantage in using sustainable materials; not only do they reduce waste in the environment, but they also add distinctive narrative personality to her eye-catching creations.

Since establishing the eclectic line in 2003, she continues to catch the eye of International media with her styling work being featured in multiple fashion editorials like FASHION, FLARE, Freshly Worn Magazine, PUMP as well as on television with the Knowledge Network & CBC Canada to name a few.

With her thoughtful and resourceful approach to designing, Melissa looks forward to continuing to implement sustainable materials & methods in all of her future collections.
